Chronic Type 1 diabetes, where it all began

Dr. Jolly Thomson’ M.B.B.S, D.G.O, M.D, (O&G) ambition to become a doctor stemmed from the sufferings of her diabetic sister. After her M.D from the prestigious Govt. Medical College Trivandrum in 1993 she underwent training in the latest technologies of the time like microsurgery, laparoscopy, painless labour and ART procedures. Challenges she faced while practicing as an infertility specialist and gynecologist added inspiration in the development of Cell Activation Programme. Dr Jolly realized the greatest obstacle in the treatment of infertility and complications of pregnancy were issues related to the couple’s lifestyle. One of the most obvious causes was abdominal obesity.

 

Best of infertility treatment is aligned to weight management

The main challenge of weight reduction treatment was getting all the essential nutrients as per RDA (recommended dietary allowance). It is almost impossible to get sufficient nutrients from a low calorie (less than 1000 kcal) natural diet. Even worse was the mental stress of dieting. If dietary supplements were prescribed these were causing further problems as they contained a large number of additives of no nutritional value. The patient’s immune system was also greatly affected by nutrition. Dr. Jolly took up the challenge to make a low calorie pro-immunity food with nutrients in correct proportion as per RDA without additives for textures, colours, preservatives or flavors.

 

Availability of more medications and procedures are not able to control lifestyle related chronic conditions

It is most important to understand that modern drugs treat lifestyle diseases by manipulating essential fatty acid(LA and ALA) metabolism in the body. For example the commonly used drug aspirin ( an anti inflammatory medication) used for pain relief, prevention of clot formation in heart disease patients, prevention of first trimester abortion and pregnancy induced hypertension acts by blocking the pro inflammatory omega 6 fatty acid metabolism. Unfortunately this drug blocks the omega 3 anti inflammatory metabolism which is the self healing capacity of our body. This is repeated for many lifestyle diseases. The solution to this crucial challenge of enabling to the fullest extent the body’s self healing capacity in a practical and simple way is one of the unique strengths of Cell Activation Program.

What provides the foundation for health is where treatment should begin

Dr. Jolly’s major observations related to modern lifestyle and its connection with lifestyle diseases and their treatment include:

  • Change in the omega 3 to 6 fatty acid ratio in modern food. For optimal health the ratio should be around 1:1 and currently the range is from 1:10 to 1:40.
  • Change in sodium to potassium ratio in modern food. For optimal health the ratio should be around 1:3 and currently the range is from 1:1 to 3:1
  • Modern diet is deficient in many nutrients especially dietary fibre, vitamin D and omega 3 fat.
  • Nutritionally unimportant substances entering the body via food, drinks and cosmetics(through scalp,skin and nose) increases the burden on our immune system and excretory organs .
  • When an injury, microbial infection or toxic exposure occurs, pro inflammatory omega 6 immune mechanism gets stimulated to stop bleeding, to eliminate the microbes or toxic agents from the body.
  • Many drugs currently in use in modern medicine are targeted to act on the pathway of omega 6 essential fatty acid derivatives to reduce inflammatory reaction in the diseased organ.
  • Most of the side effects of the medications are arising due to the drugs action on areas other than the target organ for which that drug is an offensive object. Example a drug targeted to act on joints produces asthma by action on the lungs or depression by action on the brain.
  • Drugs targeted to act on omega 6 pathway to reduce inflammation will simultaneously block the omega 3 pathway and negatively affect the body’s healing process.
  • Surgical procedures, injuries or toxic exposure all induce inflammation through omega 6 pathway while healing occurs by omega 3 pathway.
  • Healing and health of the body depends on the balance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids balance(ratio) in the body.
  • High calorie diet along with low physical activity of modern lifestyle leads to the increase in fat mass, reduction in lean mass (muscle and bone) and alters the lean mass to fat mass ratio leading to derailment of metabolic, hormonal and immune functions.

 

All treatment should begin with optimising health for better effectiveness

  • Ensure that the body gets all the nutrients in correct proportion.
  • Keep the omega 3 to 6 ratio around 1:1 in the diet and the body

There are around 600 muscles in our body. There is an emerging understanding of how skeletal muscles release myokines when they are activated. Muscles produce myokines which act as mediators of physical and mental fitness. Different muscle fibre types -slow twitch muscle fibres, oxidative muscle fibres, intermediate twitch muscle fibres, and fast twitch muscle fibres – release different clusters of myokines during contraction. Myostatin, LIF, IL-6 and IL-7 are involved in muscle hypertrophy and myogenesis, whereas BDNF and IL-6 are involved in AMPK-mediated fat oxidation.

S IL-6 has systemic effects on the liver, adipose tissue and the immune system, and mediates crosstalk between intestinal L cells and pancreatic islets. Other myokines include osteogenic factors IGF-1 and FGF-2; FSTL-1, which improves endothelial function of the vascular system. Studies in the past few years suggest the existence of yet unidentified factors, secreted from muscle cells, which may influence cancer cell growth and pancreas function. Many proteins produced by skeletal muscle are dependent upon contraction; therefore, physical inactivity leads to an altered myokines response, which could provide a potential mechanism for the association between sedentary behaviour and many chronic diseases.

 

Understanding the relation between health condition and conventional exercises to prevent tissue damage

Most exercises we adopt currently like walking, swimming, cycling, and aerobics are usually stimulating only some parts excessively. This can lead to wear and tear of some parts of the body and some other parts may not be used at all. For example during walking buttocks and some muscles of lower limb get activated repeatedly. This excess use of some part alone can lead to long term problems like damaging the joints especially knee joints The damage can be more in obese due to the excess weight on the weight bearing joints. The vertebral and abdominal muscles will not get much exercise by walking. This lack of balanced activity is the major reason for growing abdominal obesity, back pain, neck problems and disk prolapse. Many become victims of lifelong painkilling drugs, balms or undergo surgeries which at best give temporary relief without removing the underlying cause.
